Skins and Hill were named the Rookie of the Year in the National League and the American League, respectively. According to MLB.COM, it is the first time since 1981 that the starting pitchers of the two major leagues have won the Rookie of the Year at the same time.
Skins has been a strong candidate for Rookie of the Year this season. Wearing the Pittsburgh Pirates as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Rookie Draft, he has displayed fastballs with speeds of over 160 kilometers per hour this year, heating up the big leagues by banking on his fastballs.
Debuting in the MLB on May 12, he went 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA in 23 games. He struck out 170 while playing 133 innings.
According to MLB.COM, Skins is the first rookie pitcher with a one-point ERA with 170 or more strikeouts since 1913, when the ERA was officially counted. He is the second rookie award for Pittsburgh.
Skins got 23 first-place votes and seven second-place votes in the rookie of the year vote, scoring 136 points, beating out 104-point outfielder Jackson Merrill (San Diego).
